Ex-U.S. Attorney Bharara gets book deal with Knopf

Former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, who was fired by President Donald Trump earlier this year, has reached a deal with Alfred A. Knopf to write a book about "the search for justice," the publisher announced Thursday.

Bharara served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009, when he was picked by former President Barack Obama, until March, when Trump abruptly fired him after asking him months earlier to stay on. As a prosecutor, Bharara secured high-profile convictions including those of New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and state Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos.

Knopf did not disclose the terms of his book deal Thursday.

“People will regard a result as just if they regard the process leading to it as fair and if they believe the people responsible for it are fair-minded,” Bharara said in the Knopf statement. “That is the process I want to illuminate in this book.”

Bharara said the book — set to come out early 2019 — will include “the role of thoughtfulness in making the best choice” while also discussing how to discern right and wrong actions. While writing the book, he will maintain his position as a distinguished scholar in residence at the New York University School of Law.

“The law is merely an instrument, and without the involvement of human hands, it is as lifeless and uninspiring as a violin kept in its case,” Bharara said. “This is not a book just about the law. It is a book about integrity, leadership, decision making and moral reasoning.”
