Trump picks Scott Brown as his nominee for U.S. ambassador to New Zealand

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he plans to nominate former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown as the U.S. ambassador to New Zealand.

The announcement confirms months-long rumors that Brown, who supported Trump’s bid for the presidency during the Republican primaries, would get the New Zealand post.

Brown, who won a special election to the U.S. senate in 2010 before Democrat Elizabeth Warren unseated him in 2013, first said in November that he was vying to become Trump’s secretary of Veterans Affairs. That position went to David Shulkin, previously the undersecretary of the department during the Obama administration.

Brown was also briefly floated as a possible vice presidential pick for Trump’s ticket.

Brown’s appointment requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
