White House National Security Adviser Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster says Chief Strategist Steve Bannon will continue to give President Donald Trump advice on national security issues despite his removal from a key spot on the National Security Council.
“The president can get advice from anyone he wants,” including Steve Bannon, McMaster said on "Fox News Sunday." “Steve Bannon provides the president with advice on a wide range of issues and will continue to do so.”
McMaster side-stepped a question from Fox host Chris Wallace about his role in Bannon’s realignment or whether he thought it was appropriate for a political adviser to sit on the National Security Council.
“This is not as significant as it appears, I think” McMaster said, downplaying Bannon’s move. “I think what the president was doing was making clear that…in terms of permanent members of the National Security Council, have those permanent members who are there for every meeting of the National Security Council, to be those who will give him their advice on the long-term interests of the American people.”
Trump asks people he trusts around him for their advice, McMaster said, and “Steve Bannon is one of them.”
